2 Kings 12:17

2 kings 12:17 says, Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it: and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.  Hazael, the king of Syria anointed by Elijah by God's direction, went to war with Judah, taking Gath and looking to take Jerusalem.  We are not told that he was acting under God's direction, but we do know that Jehoash had turned away from God by this time.  I personally don't believe that God ordains or causes anyone to do anything evil in the world, but Hazael was being used to punish Jehoash for his sins, even though he was not a part of the nation of Israel, so this really wasn't something evil.  If we as Christians turn away from God, He may allow lost people to defeat us in order to call us back to Him.  If we have really accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and Lord, we will never be defeated forever spiritually though.  We are God's forever.  Verse eighteen adds, And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the Lord, and in the king's house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.  Jehoash took all the treasures of the temple, dedicated to God by Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, Ahaziah and himself and sent them to Hazael in order to keep him from attacking Jerusalem.  Of course, had he not turned away from God, he would have had His protection, but now he put no value on the things dedicated to God except as they helped him.  We should never use things that we have dedicated to God in an attempt to save ourselves, because only faith in Jesus Christ can save us.  Verse nineteen continues, And the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?  We are told that the rest of the things that Joash did are recorded in the chronicles of the kings, this time before we are told that he died or was killed.  I do know that God will take note of all our actions in this life, but once we die, there is no changing our everlasting destination.  Verse twenty states, And his servants arose, and made a conspiracy, and slew Joash in the house of Millo, which goeth down to Silla.  We are then told that Joash's own servants killed him.  He may have bought protection from Hazael, but this did not save him.  We may be able to buy our way out of some threatening situations, but if we have not accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and Lord, we will never be safe spiritually.  Verse twenty-one adds, For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.  After his servants killed him, he was buried with his fathers in the city of David.  Then, Amaziah his son reigned in place of him.  As Christians, Jesus Christ is the only One Who can reign in our life if we are to be successful in following God.  Still, God will call people to positions of service, and if they stray away from him or die, He will call someone else to replace them.  

2 Kings 12:9

 2 Kings 12:9 says, But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of the Lord: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the Lord.  Jehoiada put a chest with a hole in the lid at the entrance to the temple, and the priests at the door put all the money coming into the temple in it.  This was to set it aside for use in repairing the temple.  We often have designated offerings that set aside money for specific purposes, but this should never come at the expense of our tithes and offerings which are used in reaching out to the world with the gospel and providing for preachers and missionaries.  Verse ten adds, And it was so, when they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king's scribe and the high priest came up, and they put up in bags, and told the money that was found in the house of the Lord.  When there was a lot of money in the chest, the king's scribe and the high priest put the money in bags and said the money was found in the house of the Lord.  They did not just put the money in the hands of the priests.  Not everything given to God should be used to support those in full-time ministry nor under their sole authority.  Verse eleven continues, And they gave the money, being told, into the hands of them that did the work, that had the oversight of the house of the Lord: and they laid it out to the carpenters and builders, that wrought upon the house of the Lord,  They gave the money to those who had oversight of the work, and the paid the carpenters and builders.  We need to make certain that God's money, that brought into the church, is used wisely today, but we should also pay those doing work on church property a fair wage.  Verse twelve concludes, And to masons, and hewers of stone, and to buy timber and hewed stone to repair the breaches of the house of the Lord, and for all that was laid out for the house to repair it.  All those doing the work were paid fairly.  I don't believe that everyone doing the work was paid exactly the same thing, but that they were paid according to their skills and what their work contributed to the overall repair.  As followers of Christ, we are not all going to be rewarded the same materially for doing God's work, but we will all be rewarded the same spiritually and that is what really matters.  Sometimes, we can become jealous or even angry if it seems some other Christian has more in this life than we do, but this should never be true.  Verse thirteen states, Howbeit there were not made for the house of the Lord bowls of silver, snuffers, basons, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver, of the money that was brought into the house of the Lord:  They were repairing the building, but they were not making the vessels to be used in worship, which had been lost or destroyed.  Workers can repair church buildings today, but they may not be able to provide all that is necessary for real worship.  Of course, for Christians, this is not physical things, but is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and obedience to His will.  Verse fourteen adds, But they gave that to the workmen, and repaired therewith the house of the Lord.  The money collected went strictly for the repair of the temple.  If we collect money for a specific purpose under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, then we need to use that money only for the purpose for which it was collected, and we also don't need to just sit on the money forever.  If we believe that God has called us to do a specific thing, we should step out in faith and do it.  Verse fifteen continues, Moreover they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen: for they dealt faithfully.  They didn't oversee how the money was dispersed to the workmen but allowed those in charge to dispense it.  If we contract work to be done on church property today, we need to hire someone who is reputable and trust them to be honest in paying those who work for them.  Verse sixteen concludes, The trespass money and sin money was not brought into the house of the Lord: it was the priests'.  The priests were not left without a means to meet their everyday needs but received the trespass and sin money.  We don't collect trespass and sin money today, but we do need to make sure that even during building projects that we continue to bring our regular tithes at least to God.  Our offerings could be designated, but I believe that money for building projects should be in addition to what we normally give anyway.   

2 Kings 12:1

 2 Kings 12:1 says, In the seventh year of Jehu Jehoash began to reign; and forty years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.  Jehoash began to reign in the seventh year of Jehu's reign in Israel.  He reigned for forty years, but would have still been fairly young.  Some people start serving God younger than others do today, and they probably will be able to serve Him longer, but they are not guaranteed a long life.  We can only serve God faithfully for as long as we live once we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord.  Verse two adds, And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him.  Jehoash did what was right in God's sight under the instruction of Jehoiada the priest.  As Christians, we are a part of the priesthood of believers and need to live under the leadership of the Holy Spirit so that we will do what is right in God's sight.  Verse three continues, But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.  Still, Jehoash was not totally obedient to God, allowing the high places to be viewed as sacred and used for worship.  Matthew Henry said these high places competed with the altar of God at Jerusalem and may have started because at times it was dangerous to travel to Jerusalem.  Though we can worship anywhere, I believe that God expects us to gather together in His name to worship weekly at least.  Verse four states, And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the Lord, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man's heart to bring into the house of the Lord,  Jehoash told them to bring all the money dedicated to the LORD into His house, just as we must bring everything dedicated to God to His house today to be used for His mission in the world.  Verse five adds, Let the priests take it to them, every man of his acquaintance: and let them repair the breaches of the house, wheresoever any breach shall be found.  The money collected was to be used to repair the temple, which Matthew Henry says had evidently been neglected and was in need of repair.  As Christians, we cannot afford to allow God's work to fall into disrepair.  Verse six continues, But it was so, that in the three and twentieth year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches of the house.  In the twenty-third year of Jehoash's reign, the temple still had not been repaired.  Though they had been told to do so, they weren't in a hurry to repair the temple.  Though we have been told to do so, we often aren't in a hurry to share the gospel and to do God's work, especially if it is going to cost us materially.  Verse seven says, Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.  Jehoash called Jehoiada and the other priests and asked them why the repair of the temple was not being done.  Matthew Henry says that Jehoash may have had more zeal for the repair of the temple than for the actual worship of God.  We cannot allow buildings to become the focus of our worship and begin to be more concerned about a church building than we are about actually worshiping and serving God.  Verse eight adds, And the priests consented to receive no more money of the people, neither to repair the breaches of the house.  Having been told not to receive any more money that wasn't used for the repair of the temple, the priests stopped collecting any.  Even if we don't agree with the way our tithes and offerings are being used, we cannot just quit giving them.  The tithe still belongs to God to be used for His purpose, and the rest is to be used under His guidance.  

2 Kings 11:13

 2 Kings 11:13 says, And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the temple of the Lord.  When she heard the sound of the guard coming, Athaliah went to the temple of the Lord.  Matthew Henry points out that she came alone without even a guard.  She may have believed that she was too powerful to be defied, but the kingdom had already passed to another.  There are still people who believe themselves to be too important to ever be defied and who stand alone defying God and His people, but the kingdom has already passed, and Jesus Christ is the eternal King.  Verse fourteen adds, And when she looked, behold, the king stood by a pillar, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets: and Athaliah rent her clothes, and cried, Treason, Treason.  When she looked, Athaliah saw the king standing by a pillar and the people rejoicing and blowing trumpets in his honor.  When we look today, we may not see it, and too many will not accept it, but Jesus Christ is already crowned King.  When we accept Him, we should rejoice and sing praises to Him.  Athaliah tore her clothes and yelled treason when she saw what had happened.  One day, those who do not accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord will go away to everlasting punishment where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, but it won't be because anyone betrayed them.  It will be because they betrayed God by not accepting His gift of salvation.  Verse fifteen continues,  But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the Lord.  Jehoiada the priest told the captains to bring Athaliah out of the temple and slay her and anyone who followed her.  Her blood was not to be shed in the temple.  If you are not a Christian, you cannot find safety in a chirch building, and if you are, you certainly don't want to shed anyone's blood there.  Verse sixteen states, And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king's house: and there was she slain.  They took out of the temple and she went by the way that the king's horse travelled, and there she was slain.  Matthew Heny says she was trying to escape by the back way to the palace, but that didn't work, just as there is no way to escape from God's judgment if you have not put your faith in Jesus Christ.  Verse seventeen adds, And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the Lord's people; between the king also and the people.  Jehoiada then made a convent between the people and God that they would be God's people.  This covenant would also apply to the relationship of the people to each other.  When we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and Lord, we enter into a covenant prelateship with Him, but we also enter into a covenant relationship with other Christians, because we all become a part of God's kingdom.  Verse eighteen continues, And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and brake it down; his altars and his images brake they in pieces thoroughly, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of the Lord.  The people then destroyed the images to Baal and his temple and killed Mattan, the priest of Baal.  As followers of Christ, we must tear down all the idols that stand between God and us, and we cannot follow the advice of anyone who would lead us to worship anyone or anything else.  Verse nineteen says, And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the Lord, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king's house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.  They then brought Jehoash from the temple to the king's house and sat him on the throne.  As Christians, we must put Jesus Christ on the throne of our life and be obedient to God alone.  Verse twenty adds, And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: and they slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king's house.  All the people then rejoiced when the king was on the throne, just as we should rejoice when we put Jesus on the throne of our life.  Verse twenty continues, Seven years old was Jehoash when he began to reign.  Jehoash was only seven years old when he began to reign.  He was anointed by God's direction, so his age really didn't matter.  It also doesn't matter what age we are when we accept Jesus Christas our Savior and Lord.  We should come as soon as well feel His call.

2 Kings 11:1

2 Kings 11:1 says, And when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal.  When Athaliah saw that all of Joram's family including Ahaziah were dead, she began to destroy all those who were descendants of David.  Mattnew Henry points out that she was the daughter of a king, the wife of a king, and the mother of a king, but she still wanted to destroy anyone of royal descent.  As Christians, many people around the world today want to destroy us simply because we are part of the family of God, but we need to pray other Christians never do.  Verse two adds, But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king's sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain.  Jehosheba, Joash's aunt took him, Ahaziah's son, and hid him so he was not killed.  God had promised that David would always have a descendant on the throne, and no one could void His promise.  We are promised everlasting life with God when we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and Lord, and nothing nor anyone can void that promise.  Verse three continues, And he was with her hid in the house of the Lord six years. And Athaliah did reign over the land.  Joash was hidden in God's house for six years while Ahaziah reigned over the land.  We should always find spiritual security in God's house today, even if the world is trying to destroy us.  Verse four states, And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the house of the Lord, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of the Lord, and shewed them the king's son.  In the seventh year after all the royal household were killed except Joash, while Athaiah ruled the people bringing terror to them, Jehoiada the priest gathered those who ruled over troops and brought them to the house of God and showed them Joash, the king's son.  When we gather in God's name today in our places of worship, we should be there to show people God's Son, Jesus Christ.  Verse five adds, And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king's house;  Jehoiada devised a plan to protect Joash. A third of the people there with him were to be the keepers of the watch over the king's house when they came to worship on the sabbath.  On the sabbath, there were twice as many people in service, since the outgoing priests did not leave until evening.  There should be times when more people are gathered in God's name to worship Him, and we should all work together when we are.  Verse six continues, And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard: so shall ye keep the watch of the house, that it be not broken down.  Another third were to be at the gate, with the other third beyond the guard to keep watch on the house of God so that it wasn't destroyed.  As Christians, we should always be on guard against the forces of evil today so that God's house will always be protected.  Verse seven says, And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord about the king.  Jehoiada said that two thirds would then always be able to keep watch on God's house. Verse eight adds, And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in.  They were also there to protect the king, Joash.  Even if he wasn't reigning at this time, he was the rightful king.  We need to do our best to protect those who are serving Jesus Christ, the rightful King of all, but we really cannot protect Him.  Instead, He protects us spiritually forever.  Verse nine continues, And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.  The captains did as Jehoiada, God's representative, asked, and we must do what the Holy Spirit asks us to do today if we are to be successful in reaching the lost people of the world. Verse ten states, And to the captains over hundreds did the priest give king David's spears and shields, that were in the temple of the Lord.  Jehoiada gave the captains David's armor.  Matthew Henry says this could have been his personal armor or armor that he had gained in wars.  I do know that God will arm us with the power of His word when we go out to combat evil in the world.  Verse eleven adds, And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple.  The guards protected all the temple, just as we must protect all of God's word today by being obedient to the leadership of the Holy Spirit.  Verse twelve continues, And he brought forth the king's son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, God save the king.  After they were armed and organized, the brought Joash and crowned him king, and the people said long live the king.  As Christians, Jesus Christ is our King, and we must proclaim this to the world.  We should do this armed with His truth and organized to best do so.  

2 Kings 10:32

2 Kings 10:32 says, In those days the Lord began to cut Israel short: and Hazael smote them in all the coasts of Israel;  During this time, since Jehu had failed to be totally committed to God, God began to cut the people of Israel short of His protection, and Hazael began to defeat them in all their coasts.  If we as Christians begin to stray away from God, He may allow us to begin to suffer defeat in our life, especially in our battle against sin.  We have victory over all sin if we remain faithful to God, but this is by His power and not ours, and if we fail to put our faith in Him, we lose that power.  Verse thirty-three adds, From Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, even Gilead and Bashan.  Hazael began to conquer the tribes of Israel one after the other, starting with those who had remained on the other side of the Jordan.  If Christian leaders today begin to move away from obedience to God, it may lead others to do the same, and then God may remove His protective hand.  Verse thirty-four continues, Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?  As with all the leaders of Israel and Judah, Jehu's reign came to an end when he died.  God had anointed him, and he did some good things, but he still failed to be totally committed to God.  Whether we do good or bad as Christians, our life will one day end.  Of course, as Christians, we should always follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit, but too often we don't.  Verse thirty-five states, And Jehu slept with his fathers: and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead.  Jehu was buried and his son Jehoahaz ruled in his place.  We can be certain that one day we will die unless Jesus Christ returns first, and as followers of Christ, we need to have trained others to take our place.  The people of the world will not do so, but in fact will do their best to lead our children away from God.  Verse thirty-six adds, And the time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty and eight years.  Jehu had ruled Israel for twenty-eight tears, which was a fairly long reign.  He started strong in getting rid of some of the idolatry in Israel, but he did not continue to be zealous for God.  If we are in a position of leadership in the church or the world as Christians, I believe we must always be zealous about following God's word.  I personally will always believe that morality matters in a leader in the world today.

2 Kings 10:24

2 Kings 10:24 says, And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu appointed fourscore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escape, he that letteth him go, his life shall be for the life of him.  When the prophets of Baal went in to offer sacrifices, Jehu had appointed eighty men to keep any of them from escaping and told them that if any did escape, the one who allowed this would die.  This would be a strong motivation to keep this from happening.  We will never be able to round up all non-believers today and destroy them, and this isn't what we are called to do.  We are to go out among them and witness to them.  Their fate will always be between God and them.  Fortunately, neither will we be killed for not reaching them, but this should not leave us less motivated to do so.  Verse twenty-five adds, And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal.  After Jehu finished the burnt offering, he told the guards to go in and kill the prophets of Baal.  They did this, and then threw their bodies out of the city.  Though we are not called on to kill those who oppose God, after we offer ourselves to God as a living sacrifice through putting our faith in Jesus Christ, we need to destroy and cast out all those things that were idols in our lives and not allow them to have power over us anymore.  Verse twenty-six continues, And they brought forth the images out of the house of Baal, and burned them.  They then took the images of Baal from his temple and destroyed them.  Once more, as stated before, we need to remove every idol from our life once we become a Christian, even if it is something that we have valued highly before.  Verse twenty-seven states, And they brake down the image of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught house unto this day.  They then totally destroyed the idol to Baal and broke down his temple.  In our personal life, we are to do the same thing, and I believe we are then to replace the things removed with the works that we do for God.  Removing idols is important but replacing them with works for God is even more important.  Verse twenty-eight adds, Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.  When Jehu did this, he destroyed the worship of Baal in Israel, at least physically.  We may destroy the physical idols that people worship today, but that does not mean that we have stopped their worship of them.  Our emphasis should be on spiritually changing what people worship by leading them to a relationship with Jesus Christ so that they will destroy all the idols in their lives.  Verse twenty-nine continues, Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Bethel, and that were in Dan.  Even though Jehu destroyed the prophets, idols, and temple of Baal, he allowed the idols created by Jeroboam, the golden calves in Bethel, to continue to exist.  We cannot remove some idols from our lives and allow others to exist and be successful in our Christian life.  We must remove everything that would come between God and us.  We can have no golden calves, those things that come between God and us, still allowed to exist in our lives.  Verse thirty declares, And the Lord said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.  God told Jehu that since he had done well in destroying the house of Ahab that his descendants would sit on the throne for four generations.  Though our relationship to God will not save our children, if we are followers of Christ and obedient to the leadership of the Holy Spirit, it should lead them to want a relationship with Him as well.  Verse thirty-one adds, But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.  Though he removed the family of Ahab and the prophets of Baal, Jehu did not follow God.  We may do everything right physically to show that we are worshipping God, but if we don't really have a personal relationship with Him, it will all be for show.  We cannot be saved simply by removing things from our lives but can only be saved by a personal relationship with Him.
