2 Timothy 3:8

2 Timothy 3:8 says, Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.  Paul gave the example of two men who stood against Moses, who had received and shared the word of God with the people. These two were said to be men of corrupt minds who were reprobate in their faith.  There are many people today who stand against God’s word, and they have corrupt minds and are reprobate in their faith.  They deny God and put their faith in worldly things.  

Verse nine adds, But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their's also was.  Paul said those who stood against God’s word in his day would go no farther, just as these two men in the past didn’t.  There will never be a time when those who stand against God and His word will ever go any farther in doing so than in this lifetime.  When they die, or when Jesus Christ returns, they will know the truth.  

Verse ten continues, But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,  Paul said that Timothy knew his doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity and patience, which he displayed by his belief in God's word.  These were not just beliefs that Paul came up with on his own but were things that God revealed to him.  If we are going to call on people to look to us for an example of what it means to be a Christian, then all that we say and do needs to be in accordance with God’s word and will and not just our own ideas and beliefs.  

Verse eleven continues, Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.  Paul continued to list things that he had suffered for his faith but then said that the Lord had delivered him out of them all.  He wasn’t bragging about his ability but was giving God the credit for delivering him from all these sufferings.  Ultimately, Paul did die, and then he was forever delivered from all his sufferings.  We are not promised a life of ease as followers of Christ but may suffer for our faith.  Still, God will deliver us, at times from worldly suffering today but ultimately to everlasting deliverance from suffering in heaven.  

Verse twelve states, Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.  Paul said that everyone who lived Godly by faith in Jesus Christ would suffer persecution.  This is the opposite of what many preachers proclaim today.  

Verse thirteen adds, But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.  Paul said that evil men were going to become worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.  We just have to look at what is going on in the world today to realize the truth of this.
