Numbers 35:25

Numbers 35:25 says, And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil.  Someone who had accidentally killed someone instead of murdering him would be delivered out of the hand of the revenger and returned to his city of refuge, where he would live as long as the high priest lived.  Verse twenty-six adds, But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;  Verse twenty-seven continues, And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:  If the man who had accidentally killed someone left his city of refuge and was found and killed by the revenger, then the revenger would not be guilty of his blood.  Though we have no sanctuary cities like this today, if we have put our faith in Jesus Christ as our High Priest, we are safe from facing the death penalty of sin as along as He lives, which is forever.  Verse twenty-eight concludes, Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.  If the man remained in his sanctuary city until after the death of the high priest, he was free to return to his homeland.  Since our High Priest, Jesus Christ, will never die, we will never be free to return to the place we were before we accepted Him.  We are always spiritually in His sanctuary.  Verse twenty-nine states, So these things shall be for a statute of judgment unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.  These laws were to last throughout all the generations of Israel, or forever.  Verse thirty adds, Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.  God said no person could be put to death by the testimony of one person, but it would require the testimony of two or more. Verse thirty-one continues, Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death. Though the murderer was to be put to death, the people were to take no satisfaction in it.  Too often today I believe we want the death of those most in need of God's salvation, but their death should break our heart.  They are then doomed to everlasting destruction  which is never what God wants.  Verse thirty-two concludes, And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.  They were also to take no satisfaction for the man who had fled to the sanctuary city where he was safe until the death of the high priest.  Verse thirty-three says, So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.  God then said, through Moses, that the land could not be cleansed of shed blood, except by the blood of the one who shed ot.  Our sin brings a death sentence, but Jesus shed His blood in our place to cleanse us, and that is the only way to be cleansed.   Verse thirty-four adds, Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the LORD dwell among the children of Israel.  Like the people of Israel, we as followers of Christ are to not defile the land, because God dwells amongst us. 

Numbers 35:16

Numbers 35:16 says, And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.  Sanctuary cities did not remove the penalty for murder from a person.  If they deliberately killed someone, they were still to be put to death, even if they had fled to a sanctuary city.  Verse seventeen adds, And if he smite him with throwing a stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.  Verse eighteen continues, Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.  A couple of more ways of deliberately killing someone were listed.  It didn't really matter what method of killing was used, but what mattered was the intent.  Deliberately killing someone by any method brought a death sentence.  Verse nineteen states, The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him.  The one who was the blood revenger, the relative of the person murdered was to carry out the death sentence when he met the murderer.  This was only to be done if there was no doubt that the man had committed the murder, and Matthew Henry says some suggest that even then it was to be done only after the man was found guilty in the court of law.  This was not for revenge, but to fulfill the law.  Verse twenty adds, But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;  Verse twenty-one continues, Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him.  These verses say that if a person kills another out of hatred or by laying in wait to kill him for whatever reason, he will be put to death by the one who is the blood relative chosen to do so.  Again, this is not to be done for revenge, but is to be done to fulfill the law.  We today as followers of Christ are to act under His law, which is the law of forgiveness.  We are never to act out of hatred for another person, but are always to look for them to be redeemed by Jesus Christ.  Verse twenty-two says, But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait,  Verse twenty-three adds, Or with any stone, wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm:  There is once again a distinction made between accidentally killing someone and murdering someone deliberately, and the one who accidentally killed another was not to be killed.  Verse twenty-four continues, Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:  The congregation was to judge between the slayer and the revenger in this case.  The law of God was still in effect, just as it is today.  

Numbers 35:9

Numbers 35:9 says, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,  Verse ten adds, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come over Jordan into the land of Canaan;  God was still giving Moses directions for the people of Israel once they were in the Promised Land.  This required Moses and the people of Israel to be obedient.  We must likewise be obedient once we become a follower of Christ, and we must be obedient for as long as we live.  Verse eleven continues, Then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares.  These were the cities of refuge of the Levites already referred to according to Matthew Henry.  This was a place where someone who had accidentally killed someone could go for refuge.  Verse twelve states, And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.  This was also the place of safety from someone wanting to avenge the death of another before the one who had killed that person could have a fair trial.  We should never set out to avenge the death of anyone without the accused person having a fair trial.  The ultimate judgment will always be God's to make.  Verse thirteen adds, And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge.  There were to be a total of six cities of refuge.  Verse fourteen continues, Ye shall give three cities on this side Jordan, and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan, which shall be cities of refuge.  These six cities were to be split into three on each side of the Jordan.  All were to have equal access to them, just as we all have equal access to the sanctuary of Jesus Christ, no matter where we are.  Verse fifteen concludes, These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither.  These cities of refuge were for both the Israelites and for other people who were in the land who had need of them. We all have access to forgiveness for our sins through faith in Jesus Christ, and we all have need of it.  

Numbers 35:1

Numbers 35:1 says, And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,   As they were on the edge of the Promised Land, God once more spoke to Moses.  God was still working in Moses life since he was still alive.  God will work through Christians today as long as we are alive and allow Him to.  Verse two adds, Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.  Once more, God was making sure that the rest of the people of Israel took care of the Levites.  They were set aside to do God's work and had not inherited any land.  They were to be given cities throughout all the land.  Verse three continues,  And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.  Along with the cities, the Levites were to be given land for their cattle.  We today need to make sure that all the needs of our preachers and others in full-time ministry area met. Verse four states, And  the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.  The amount of land outside the cities given to the Levites that they were to also be given was determined by God and not the people nor the Levites themselves.  As long as we and those in full-time service to God allow God to determine how we support them, then everyone should be satisfied.  Verse five adds, And ye shall measure from without the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and the city shall be in the midst: this shall be to them the suburbs of the cities.  This continues to specify the amount of land the Levites were to be given.  Verse six adds, And among the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites there shall be six cities for refuge, which ye shall appoint for the manslayer, that he may flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two cities.  The Levites were to be given a total of forty-eight cities, of which six were to be cities of refuge.  These cities of refuge were where where those who had killed a person could go for safety.   This was not a place to escape punishment for murder, but a place of safety for someone who had killed someone without intending to from the relatives of the one who had been killed.  Verse seven adds, So all the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with their suburbs.  Again, God told Moses to tell the people that these forty-eight cuties throughout the Promised Land were to be given to the Levites.  God's ministers need to be living throughout the world today, and we as followers of Christ need to make sure that we support them in accordance with God's guidance.  Verse eight continues, And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.  God said that they were to give these cities in accordance with what they had been blessed with.  God still expects us to give in accordance with what He has blessed us with as we support His ministers today.

Numbers 34:16

Numbers 34:16 says, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,  Verse seventeen adds, These are the names of the men which shall divide the land unto you: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun.  God then told Moses the men who would divide the land for him were Eleazar the priest, and Joshua, who was to be Moses's replacement.  As we serve God today, we need to do so at His discretion and also realize that at some point, someone will replace us.  Verse eighteen continues, And ye shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land by inheritance.  One prince from every tribe was to be chosen to represent the people as the land was divided.  The next several verses list the names of these princes, or men who were representing the tribes. Verse nineteen states, And the names of the men are these: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.  Verse twenty, And of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud.  Verse twenty-one, Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon.  Verse twenty-two, And the prince of the tribe of the children of Dan, Bukki the son of Jogli.  Verse twenty-three, The prince of the children of Joseph, for the tribe of the children of Manasseh, Hanniel the son of Ephod.  Verse twenty-four, And the prince of the tribe of the children of Ephraim, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan.  Verse twenty-five, And the prince of the tribe of the children of Zebulun, Elizaphan the son of Parnach.  Verse twenty-six, And the prince of the tribe of the children of Issachar, Paltiel the son of Azzan.  Verse twenty-seven,  And the prince of the tribe of the children of Asher, Ahihud the son of Shelomi.  Verse twenty-eight, And the prince of the tribe of the children of Naphtali, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.  Verse twenty-nine, These are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance unto the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.  The division of the land was under God's guidance in all aspects, with representatives of all the people involved present.  God still leads His people in all aspects if we will only follow Him, and there should never be a reason for dissension if we do.

Numbers 34:1

Numbers 34:1 says, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,  Verse two adds, Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land of Canaan; (this is the land that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan with the coasts thereof:)  God once again spoke to Moses, this time with a command to the people of Israel concerning their coming into the land of Canaan which was to be their inheritance.  We still need to be directed by God’s word today.  Verse three continues, Then your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the coast of Edom, and your south border shall be the outmost coast of the salt sea eastward:  God begins to lay out the borders of the land of Israel, starting on the south.  Verse four states, And your border shall turn from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass on to Zin: and the going forth thereof shall be from the south to Kadeshbarnea, and shall go on to Hazaraddar, and pass on to Azmon:  Verse five adds, And the border shall fetch a compass from Azmon unto the river of Egypt, and the goings out of it shall be at the sea.  Verse six continues, And as for the western border, ye shall even have the great sea for a border: this shall be your west border.  God then specified the western border.  Verse seven says, And this shall be your north border: from the great sea ye shall point out for you mount Hor:  Verse eight adds, From mount Hor ye shall point out your border unto the entrance of Hamath; and the goings forth of the border shall be to Zeda:  Verse nine continues, And the border shall go on to Ziphron, and the goings out of it shall be at Hazarenan: this shall be your north border.  Then, God established the northern border of Israel.  Verse ten states, And ye shall point out your east border from Hazarenan to Shepham:  Verse eleven adds, And the coast shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain; and the border shall descend, and shall reach unto the side of the sea of Chinnereth eastward:  Verse twelve continues, And the border shall go down to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the salt sea: this shall be your land with the coasts thereof round about.  God then specified the eastern border.  God did not allow the people of Israel to decide what the Promised Land was and just claim all the land that they wanted, and He doesn't allow us to claim whatever we want today and then give it to us.  As followers of Christ, we should pray that God will give us what He wants us to have and be satisfied with it, instead of attempting to get Him to give us everything we desire.  Verse thirteen states, And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, This is the land which ye shall inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half tribe:  Moses told the nine and a half tribes who were crossing the river to stay that they would inherit the land by lot.  This was not by chance, though, but by God using the lots to reveal His will so that none could say they weren't treated fairly.  However God chooses to reveal His will for us today, we should never feel that we have been cheated because someone else has more.  Verse fourteen adds, For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance; and half the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance:  Mose pointed out that the tribe of Rueben and Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh had already received their inheritance on the other side of the Jordan, though I'm not sure this was really ever a part of the Promised Land.  Verse fifteen continues, The two tribes and the half tribe have received their inheritance on this side Jordan near Jericho eastward, toward the sunrising.  Moses then specified the boundaries of the land these two and a half tribes had claimed for their inheritance. 

Numbers 33:38

Numbers 33:38 says, And Aaron the priest went up into mount Hor at the commandment of the LORD, and died there, in the fortieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the first day of the fifth month.  We once again have the record of Aaron going up on Mount Hor at God's commandment and dying there, forty years after the people of Israel left Egypt.  Verse thirty-nine adds, And Aaron was an hundred and twenty and three years old when he died in mount Hor.  Aaron was a hundred and twenty-three years old, and had evidently spent the first eighty-three as a slave in Egypt, then forty as God's priest wandering in the wilderness.  We are not guaranteed riches and power in this lifetime as followers of Christ.  Verse forty states, And king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the children of Israel.  The king of the Canaanites heard about the coming of the people of Isreal.  People today should hear about the coming of God's people into their communities.  We should be as hard to overlook as the people of Israel were.  The next several verses continue to track their movements.  Verse forty-one adds, And they departed from mount Hor, and pitched in Zalmonah.  Verse forty-two, And they departed from Zalmonah, and pitched in Punon.  Verse forty-three, And they departed from Punon, and pitched in Oboth.  Verse forty-four, And they departed from Oboth, and pitched in Ijeabarim, in the border of Moab.  Verse forty-five, And they departed from Iim, and pitched in Dibongad.  Verse forty-six And they removed from Dibongad, and encamped in Almondiblathaim. Verse forty-seven, And they removed from Almondiblathaim, and pitched in the mountains of Abarim, before Nebo.  Verse forty-eight, And they departed from the mountains of Abarim, and pitched in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.  Verse forty-nine concludes, And they pitched by Jordan, from Bethjesimoth even unto Abelshittim in the plains of Moab.  They were once again on the edge of the Promised Land, though nearly all of those who had been there before had died.  As Christians, we will never get to the Promised Land, Heaven, in this lifetime, but we must faithfully follow God as we wander through this world full of sin, and we are always but a breath away from entering in.  Verse fifty says, And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,  Verse fifty-one adds, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye are passed over Jordan into the land of Canaan;  God told Moses to speak to the children of Israel and tell them when they had passed over the Jordan into Canaan.  The promise God was about to make was still based on them obeying His command and actually entering the Promised Land, without questioning if they would be successful in conquering it.  When God sends us somewhere, we must simply go by faith without questioning Him.  Verse fifty-two continues, Then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places:  When they got to the Promised Land mthey were to drive out the inhabitants and destroy all their idols.  This will already be accomplished for us when we get to Heaven.  Verse fifty-three states, And ye shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein: for I have given you the land to possess it.  God said they were to dispossess the people there and then dwell there because God had given them the land.  There will be no other gods in heaven, nor people who have not put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.  Verse fifty-four adds, And ye shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: and to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give the less inheritance: every man’s inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers ye shall inherit.  God told Moses that the land was to be distributed fairly and by His plan.  Wherever we might be in Heaven one day, it will be where God put us.  Verse fifty-five continues, But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.  God said if they did not drive out the people living there that they would be a continual problem for them.  We cannot drive out all the people who would cause us problems from the world today, but as Christians, we need to keep them from setting up camp in our fellowship of believers.  Verse fifty-six concludes, Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.  God then said if the people of Isreal did not do as He commanded them to do to the inhabitants of the land, then He would do to the Israelites as He had intended to do to the people in the land.  Professing to be a follower of Christ without really putting our faith in Him will one day lead to our everlasting separation from God.  If we truly put our faith in Jesus Christ, we must do our best to drive sinful things out of our life.
